The map in our Admissions Area highlights the Chippewa Valley, the drainage basin of the Chippewa River and its tributaries. The Chippewa River flows about 185 miles from Lake Chippewa in Sawyer County to the Mississippi River at Lake Pepin.

Civil War Roster
83 soldiers from the Chippewa Valley served in Company I, 30th Wisconsin Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. The company spent more than a year on the far western Dakota plains at Fort Union. Battle killed 1, but scurvy killed 5. The roster shows the casualties.

Before milking machines, families had to milk by hand. Milking machines attached to electric vacuum pumps allowed family herds to grow. Beginning in the 1950s, some farmers shifted to milking parlors. Today, some small dairy farmers continue to use stanchions like the ones in this barn.

By the 1950s, cars and trains crisscrossed northern Wisconsin as major public and private ad campaigns encouraged people to travel here. Frank Csongedi, whose family owned Basswood Lodge near New Auburn for seven decades, estimated 95% of his family’s guests came from Chicago.

The Ku Klux Klan in Wisconsin grew rapidly between 1922 and 1924, when more than 40,000 persons claimed membership in the state. KKK members believed in “America for Americans,” – a United States in which everyone looked and acted like the white, Protestant majority who founded the nation. Churches were often the first community buildings that neighbors built in the 1800s. Now, many rural churches have consolidated or closed. The communion rail and baptismal font on display are from Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, once in the Town of Brunswick in Eau Claire County. It closed in 1976.

Ojibwe Log Driving Crew
During the logging boom, timber stood near and on Ojibwe reservations. Timber on the reservations disappeared at great speed, usually illegally.

In 2010, 23% of Wisconsin’s residents had been born in another state. Less than 5% were born in another country (compared to 1880, when almost 31% of Wisconsin residents were foreign born). New people today come to the Chippewa Valley for the same reasons that have always brought people: jobs, educational opportunities, asylum, or simply better lives for themselves and their families.
One of greatest floods on record in the Chippewa Valley began September 9, 1884. Fourteen inches of rain fell in the northern watershed in a single day. Thousands of logs in holding ponds broke loose and came barreling down the Chippewa River. Raging waters and rushing logs swept away 19 bridges. A team of UW-Stout students developed this animated video.
